Distinguished and Famous people from Bombala
The Bombala district was the childhood home of a soldier who later became a prominent national voice for returned service personnel. His connection continued through farming and involvement in the local RSL.
🎖️ Sir William “Bill” Keys
Bill Keys grew up in the Bombala region and attended the one-teacher school at Ando before boarding at Hurlstone Agricultural High School. During the Second World War he served with the 2/3rd Pioneer Battalion in New Guinea and Borneo, where he was wounded on Tarakan. He returned to the family farm after the war, then served in Korea before again taking over farming responsibilities near Bombala. His involvement with returned service organisations began locally while on leave in 1944. He went on to become national president of the RSL, linking a Monaro farming background with a much wider public role.
